Hi guys and gals,
Got another weird one in my battle with MS networking. Here's the setup: 2 XP computers a Linksys wired router (BEFSX41) and a Win98 computer in the basement. Internet connection is a Motorola cable modem.
The Win 98 basement computer is mostly for storage and I rarely change settings on it. A few nights ago I tried to sign on to the internet from the basement computer. Everything had worked fine up to that point. The router came on and asked for a password. I entered the standard password that came with the router and which I had never changed. Says wrong password OR my browser does not know how to present the password.
Very strange because the router had never asked for a password before and it still does not on the XP computers upstairs. :hmm:
Any ideas?

| Have you tried resetting the router?

Yes sir. I have, several times. I get the same screen. It asks for a network password (I use a blank password)
and when I enter the password (or rather hit enter) I get a red screen with this message:
401 Authorization Required
You are not authorized to use this device
Either you have entered wrong credentials (eg, bad password) or your browser doesn't understand how to supply the credentials required. I am using Internet Explorer.

Now it does still work from the upstairs? correct
Why is the router asking for a password anyway? do you have it set to sign on to the router(like parental control) before you can use the net connection?
Caps lock on??stuck key in the keyboard?? |

On the 98 computer go to Control Panel and click on the network icon. In the window that comes up, on the configuration tab, scroll down to components until you find the ethernet card and highlight it. In the lower box, be sure that Windows login is chosen rather than something else. Also scroll down and locate the TCP/IP protocol and highlight it and make sure that Windows login is also selected. (If any changed to Client for Microsoft Network, that can cause login boxes to come up).

Thank you! That did the job. Apparently it was the Client for Microsoft Networks that was the problem. Works OK now. The question I have now is this: I have always used Client for MS Networks. Never had a problem. This machine worked fine with that setting before. Why not now?
Also, should I change my two XP machines that are working just fine with these settings?
Fastway: The upstairs machines worked fine. No parental control (No parents around here ) Apparently it was the Client that was the problem. Still no clue why it worked previously.
Thanks folks.

I don't run XP but my advice...if it is working, don't change settings on those computers!
I had to change some 98SE settings when I wanted to network my computers and I know I did have to make the change that I mentioned. |

Liz,
Probably good advice, but not likely to happen. I'm always tweaking my setup. Probably why I use this emoticon a lot. :w00t: :w00t: :w00t:
