there are some sad people in this world
(i remember mommabear posting about this)

A few days ago I asked readers if they would like to express their biggest hope for Obama in eight words or fewer. The number of comments on that post is now approaching 1,700 and is still rising.
I was surprised at first by how many readers gave their main hope as simply that the President-Elect survive. I was inclined to believe that this was paranoia. Perhaps these readers, having been sure that Americans wouldn't elect a black President, had simply switched over to the view that he would be killed.
But after moderating the comments for a while, I changed my mind.
Because it was a disturbing, depressing experience.
Most of the comments, given the hour at which they were posted, came from the United States. And among them were dozens and dozens, certainly more than 100, comments from people who want, and are prepared to say they want, Barack Obama to be killed.
I did not allow these repulsive comments. But after a lot of thought I have decided to give you a small sample. I think it is important to understand the hate that is out there.
The hope for Obama is:
That he goes to Dallas
A bullet!
Rapid death, and soon
Assassination
An assassin's bullet, right on target
That he has an 'unfortunate' accident
That he choke on a splintered rib bone and expires
These are not death threats, of course. But I think they show that there is something to fear. I think it shows that the worry about a killer is not a product of fevered imaginations.
There are some very sick people in this world. |

| I didn't post about this before the election because I didn't want to be accused of using "fear tactics", but the facts are that Obama has to worry about this.
Of course, I remember quite a few comments from the nutters hoping for Bush and Cheney to die, too.

yep but they were just nuts and mad about bush winning.
there is really a few groups out there that are prepared to do in bo.
and have plans already set up to try it at a given time. i know this
because i know the southern people very well. and from the latest news on tv in the last two years there is a lot of stuff to make bo worried.
the kkk just the other week killed a person whom they lured to a meeting over the internet to join them. when she changed her mind they shot her
not just one shot either,
so theres still a lot of stuff to look out for.
just by who is unknown there are splinter groups starting up all the time in many different places. |

You know there are alot of crazy people in this world with precious few in institutions. I am sure there are plenty of people that would speak or wish ill of President Obama for any number of reasons not the least being the fact he is black. However I take exception to the statement that somehow "the southern people" would be more inclined to wish him harm. I happen to know "the southern people" quite well myself so I know how untrue that statement is. Making blanket statements about folks because of race, sex, religion, geography, etc. is just plain wrong. Should we be wary of all mid westerners because a few skinhead and neo-nazi groups are headquartered there? I'm sure if I wanted to I could make the same type of claims about the north, west, europe, the middle east, Ithink you get the point. End of rant, thank you. |
