Has anyone ever seen this. Complaint is that computer gets overrun by pop ups instantaneously and gets a pink screen as opposed to a blue one. The only message that come up is bad dog, the devil made him do it.

Sounds like a "clasic" hack. The solution may require booting from a CD or removing the drive and placing it in a well protected computer as a "slave" to disinfect it. The fact that the same message comes up indicates that the drive has been "hacked".

HACKED, is just another way of saying "Infected" with a Virus, Trojan or Spyware.

If you're not already running recommended Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware software, it's high time you DO!

At the very minimum, you need a good Anti-Virus program like AVG 8.0 FREE, which incorporates Anti-Spyware, Anti-Rootkit and Anti-Trojan protection.

Add to that a great Anti-Spyware program, "Spybot Search & Destroy"
which can find and remove several thousand titles of spyware, adware and even some trojans.

We've talked about this, here in this forum, every day for the past few years, so it should be no secret to any reader.

Go Get'em!

Hey DOC, if it were mentioned before that AVG 8 has an anti-rootkit in it, I missed it! - Sounds great that A/V programmers are now including at least something to DETECT them. - Had an instructor say that they are a B**** to remove & in 99% of the cases you have to do a reinstall of the OS. If this actually STOPS them all the better!

Lissa, Welcome to the Lockergnome Forums!
Here is a link to a thread which talks about the currently recommended tools to prevent/cleanup the problems you seem to be having, scroll down the page about halfway to see the links...download the current versions of AVG and Spybot tools, install them and turn them loose on your HD...be sure to set a System Restore point first...you can delete it later, after confirming all is well... Cool

How do I know all is well? Glad You asked! 1. the bad dog message disappears, and 2. all your programs run correctly.

If the bad dog message still exists, then try Trojan Hunter next, and let us know what happens...we should be able to get you cleaned up... Laughing

Cheers!

Hello,

Based on your report, I am inclined to believe the message is another popup, possibly from browser-based malware.

As others have already noted, there are many different programs available to detect, remove and prevent such annoyances.

Regards,
