| Acronis True Image and just plain copy in Windows Explorer. I use Outlook to remind me to do it.

Not really sure what yer gettin at here, but here goes...
I use Nero or just plain Windows XP cd burner to backup files (mp3, docs, pix, utils, video, tools, Janet Jackson, Buffy, etc) to CD. I use both Ghost and Drive Image to image my OS partitions so I can redo my PC in less than 15 min if I kill it.
I'm going to go to a new setup, probably this weekend if things work out right. I'm going to format and set up my XPPro on this thing (I'm dual booting with 98 at the moment) and install 95, 98, 98se, ME, 2K, and XP on virtual drives in VMWare.
I will never browse with a real OS, vulnerable to the whims of the Net. Never more will I fear opening "Enhancement" emails with promises (that I don't really need, but hey). Really.
I'll keep an extra copy of each handy, especially XP Pro, my OS of choice right now; so if I get virused or trojaned I can just wipe out the VM file for that OS and replace it with a pristeen copy.
No more will they get to me in any really important way. BBWWWAAAhahahahahahahahahahahahahaah...,,,
Hope this helps. |

| i use smart backup. it will simply copy selected files/folders (you can set up file sets for repeated backups) to cd or remote site or another drive. or zip while doing it. it is simple to use, and doesn't use a special format. so if my system crashes and i need a file i can take the backup disk to another computer and use it. seem many backup programs use special formatting which don't allow accessing the data without that program. |

Such wonderful programs! :D
In MY case, I am looking for something I could boot to, and have it mirror my whole drive to an external, USB drive.
Anyway, thanks for all the links guys! Keep `em coming! |

You are about the 10th person (Out of 20?) to say Ghost 2003 is what they use...
I think it is the way I will go, sounds simple and from what I understand I can be back and running within an hour if something does go wrong. |

You can't store an image on your c drive.I have a second drive for storage and keep one there, and for double backup I burn one to CD(or should I say CD's).To save time on restore make sure you have all your winders updates. The reason I bought it was my computer restore CD's from the factory were made with Ghost 2003 and had no probs. with them. |

Well I shouldn't have knocked on wood.I just had to use Ghost to restore my computer.I downloaded Windows media player 10 beta, and since I have windows system restore (the sponge) turned off this was the only way to get rid of wmp 10.I had installed winders and all the updates before ghosting the hard drive and thats what ghost put back on my drive.Don't download WMP 10 beta there is still problems with it. |

| I tried using Ghost 2003 to image my HD to an external USB drive and it wouldn't work. Kept getting an error saying it is not a firewire device. Right now all I'm using is the backup that comes with Xp Pro. I have had it with Symantec products. |

I just tried the Symantic 2003 Ghost thing... I am running on a bootable Linux distro right now (Knoppix) can you guess why?
Ok, so I clicked clone drive to drive... that was all good, then it rebooted..... ok, and now my computer won't boot. Says "boot drive error" or something along those lines, the drive is fine (I think?) but it's like it totasted my bootloader! And best of all, I don't have a floppy! Thanks Symantic! >=|
Ok.... now to figure out how to get a new bootloader on here from a Knoppix cd without a floppy drive. Just great. |

| Maybe This will help. Symantec has a good rep for buying up good products and turning them into crap. |

Ok.... SCRATCH! Symantics products are off my list I think.
Are there any other basic "boot and copy" backup software things?
All I really want is to throw a disk in, say mirror disk 1 to disk 2 and walk away.
Something makes me think http://insert.cd/ may be a good little program for what I want ^_^ |

I use Future System's Casper - Works great! Makes exact copy of drive or partition. |
