I am running WinXP Pro and am wondering what everyone uses for a backup program....

I tried "Handy Backup 3.5" but it doesn't set the archive bit, meaning that it is a full backup every time. I would just like to backup files that have changed.

I thought maybe the newer versions would have included this feature, but

"Note: that in case of backup onto a CD(s), the program performs only full backup"

I would like to do incremental backups.

I have been using the built in Back-up utility in advanced mode, provided with XP and following these instructions.

I use Replicator. It will only back up what's been changed amongst other options.

Although I've never used it, I've heard good things about Backup4All.

Try 'em out and see which works best fer ya.

I've been using WinBackup from Liu Utilities for a couple of weeks now.

It seems to pick out the updated files just fine and is the first backup app that will not hang up (so far) and burns to DVD-RW that I've found. I've got it doing automatic backups of Outlook Express, passwords, custom mouse settings, logfiles, favorites.....etc.

Buying thru infopackets.com saves an extra sawbuck.

I also use BootIT NG to save compressed images to network drive(s) and run the show.I routinely copy my boot partition(s) and boot the copys to try new, dangerous, weird, or just plain silly things.(like XP Sp1, winamp9 and moviemaker2). When XP gets weird on me (about once a week), I just delete the whole partition and copy the previous one- takes about 10 minutes.

Sort of like using belt, suspenders and both thumbs in the loops to keep your pants up,
but I haven't been burned in a while.

Update 1/27/03
BootIT's latest update now supports burning to DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW with optional bit-for-bit verification from the image.

It apparently makes 2 copies of the image on the DVD-RW and compares them; not that I've ever lost a bit when resizing, sliding, copying, compressing, expanding, recovering, or burning with it, yet.

Hello,

I have been using STOMP, Inc.'s BackUp My PC to backup data from my hard drive
to tape and disc. I just recently restored some data from a tape I made a couple
of months ago, so I am quite certain it works.

I started using the program around 1995, when it was sold under the name
"Backup Exec" by Arcadia Software (followed by Seagate Software and Veritas
Software) to back up files to a 2GB 4mm DAT tape. Today I use it with a Travan
NS20 QIC drive (20GB compressed, 10GB native) and a first-generation Panasonic
2.6GB DVD-RAM drive.

I also use KarenWare's Replicator to copy various documents and files I'm working
with to an external 2.5" hard drive, mostly for portability purposes (it is much lighter
to carry than a laptop). I also use Ahead Software's Nero Burning Rom to make back up files to CD-R.

No question Dantz Retrospect. It can do a full backup, incremental as you requested and much more. I have used Backup Exec for years and though it was great in it's day I wouldn't go back to it now for anything. Retrospect will back up only your changed files (truly changed not just changed attributes like other's) and if you have multiple copy's of the same file it only actually places one copy in backup saving space. It can schedule backups and do true network backup's. Other's just backup network drives but just see them as part of your system. Retrospect actually backs up a network machine properly including registry settings and all. It does much more than I can mention here but I can't recommend it enough. Well worth paying for. I've just got STOMP but I'm not that pleased with it. It can backup to CDRW but it backs up files into a propriotory file system so it can't be read on another computer unless the programme is installed on it. Also it's not clear how much space is left on the CD and its compression system actually increases the file size!

I'd like any recommendations for software that backs up to CDRW, keeps the files in their original format and has the option to backup new or changed files.

Hello,

If you have packet writing software installed for your CD-RW drive, have you considered using a program like Microsoft's ROBOCOPY (included in the Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Resource Kit or PixeLab's XXCOPY or KarenWare's Replicator to make differential backup's to CD-RW discs?

I'm not big on spending much time doing backups. This program does the trick when I find I'm in the mood for it: No Hands Backup 2.0

The program is especially useful for backing up data files. It would review the source and archive and only back up files that are new or changed. It allows the user to customize the backup to a very high degree. I've not messed with the current version, but the previous version had one thing to watch out for. It defaulted to deleting files in the archive that where no longer present at the primary source. You may want to watch for this if you try it out.

Have a nice day.
