Well, yesterday i went to turn on my laptop. Before it reached the xp loading screen i was greeted by "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
C:\windows\system32\config\system

You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup CD-Rom. Select "r" at the first screen to start repair"

This error is preventing me from using my laptop. I did some research to how i could fix this problem and i found that it was through the recovery mode in the xp cd. However this is the screwed up bit, when i try and repair or reformat via the xp cd i get a big phat blue screen of death saying "Bad_Pool_Caller" This Is frustrating as hell as i am stuck in a circle. I hope someone in this forum has the solution

Thanks,
Dom Evil or Very Mad

First off, I do NOT recommend the recovery console to anyone other than admins that know how to use it.
2nd, did you try a "REPAIR INSTALL" there is a difference in what it is & what it does from the console.
3rd, if you started a format, then 2 to 1, you hosed the setup & will need to rebuild your system.

Respond to these before doing anything & we'll go from there.

Bad Pool Caller may indicate a problem with the RAM.

I assume you might not have a floppy drive so go here
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Memtest86_d4226.html
download the iso and burn it to a CD. It is very small.
Boot the computer from the CD and let the memory test run.

According to "google" it appears to BE RAM related. BUT...
According to M$ it appears to be code related as they have patches for about everything under the sun EXCEPT for what you stated & your OS. (for what I saw, anyway)- go figure.

So it MAY be worth the try to do the check but not sure if it is the problem at this point.
But first I have to ask, where you adding anything or doing anything to change the computer? - this is one of the reasons I saw.
If not, then you probably safe to go with the memory scan at this point.
But I'd like a little more input on the situation before recommending doing to much as messing "in the blind" may make things worse.

The laptop is a HP dv2000

Processor type
Intel® Core™ Duo Processor T2050
• 1.60GHz, Level 2 cache 2 MB

1gb ram

Operating system installed
Genuine Windows XP Professional

Upgradability
Windows Vista Capable PC

Well. I think it had something to do with memory because it was running and i turned it off by the switch insetead of start > shut down

This will corrupt your files, IF your HD is still writing. I suspect that is what happened & now your system is corrupted.

I suggest you run the memory scan. If OK, then do a repair install.

Not to sound snotty but - I'm NOT talking format here THAT will blow away everything on your HD. (I don't think you want that) At what point after running the CD do you get the BSOD?

Did you run the memory scan yet?
If OK, here is what to do - best I can recall off the top of my head so may not be 100%
Put the CD in drive & run as you would to do an INSTALL
At some point it SHOULD give you the option to do a REPAIR INSTALL (it will actually say this) that is what you want. When run, it will run through an install that LOOKS as usual but won't destroy your data.
Reboot when done & all SHOULD be well.
As a last resort you may have to rebuild, but we will deal with that if need be.

Well, do the memory scan so we can verify if your sticks are OK, then we can go from there.

Hello,

Based on your description of the problem, it is possible one of the memory modules in your computer has begun to fail.

Try following ZLim's suggestion to run MemTest86+ and see what it reports.

To do a " Repair Install " goes exactally like this:

1ST Put CD in drive > Then reboot

Press any key to boot from CD

Press ENTER >NOT "R" >that will come in a sec, I know what it says but trust me on this one Smile

Press F8

Press R >This is the screen to Repair Install

Press NO KEYS AFTER THIS > PERIOD .

It will reboot several times and it will ask to boot from CD again, DO NOT DO THIS, it will stay in repair

To Repete myself > PRESS NO KEYS AFTER YOU PRESS " R " FOR REPAIR INSTALL
