Hello,

Avira (formerly H+BEDV Datatechnik GmbH) is a German anti-virus company that dates back to at least the late 1980s. It is still run by the founder, Tjark Auerbach. Both the company and founder are well-known and respected within the anti-virus community.

I've used AntiVir for several years. Put it on all the family computers too. Never got anything more serious than a couple of homepage hijacks, way back when. I use it along with Sygate Firewall. It's still a great firewall even though it was discontinued when it was bought out by Symantec.

But for those using older Windows OS's, AntiVir will no longer support them as of the end of this year. You can't get a fresh download of version 7 for anything older than XP now, and they will stop the virus definition updates by the end of the year.

So, now I'm hunting for another antivirus for the grandkids computers that aren't up to running XP. I think I've settled on AVG for them since they won't have to manually renew the free license periodically by email. Knowing teenagers, that's something they wouldn't bother to do.

AVG is Europe's #1 Security Software Company. I've had four updates from them in just one day. I've had updates from them on Easter morning, Sundays and other Holidays. It appears they work 24x7 protecting their clients.

Not just anti-virus, but anti-spyware and Anti-Rootkit too.

Yes, it's a good program for any version of windows from 98 to Vista.
For Vista Ultimate 64, AVG Pro is required. It's retail, but the price is ridiculously low.

AVG is great for kids or older folks that just don't remember to do updates.
AVG 7.5 FREE updates automatically every day and even runs a full scan in the background once a day, as set up in the scheduler.

I've used it for years and I've installed it for all my customers. AVG gets my vote every time.

Y'all have a great day now, Y'hear?

Before you settle on AVG, note this on the site
Quote:
Some older operating systems such as Microsoft Windows ME, Microsoft Windows NT and Microsoft Windows 98 will only be supported until August 2008 as a minimum.

By the latter end of 2008, it might not be safe to go on the internet using anything below 2K because MS hasn't patched any security holes since July 2006 and most of the vendors will not be supporting older version of security software that runs on anything below 2K.
I've replaced my AdAware with Superantispyware on my lone 98SE computer because AdAware1.06 will soon stop getting updates and to use AdAware 2007, you must be running 2K and newer. I don't use this computer to surf but I still want it protected as far as possible.

That sounds like a blond thing......stop using a wonderful program now because it "Might" stop getting updates a year or more from now.
Huh?

That sounds like "Computer Logic". A conundrum!

Thanks for the info, zlim. I suppose that's just the way it's going to be for just about any software. But by 2008, one grandkid will be just about headed to college, so a new computer is likely. As for the younger one (the more responsible one) there's always Ghost to clean her up and start fresh if she ever gets into too much trouble, until she too gets a new computer.

As long as both of them stay off the main computer at their house, virus attacks mainly just affect what the kids normally do...email and IM and homework. It's not like their computers have serious stuff on them like private banking information and the like that can be lost or stolen.

If they don't backup their homework, that's their problem. lol!

Most of the time when I have to redo their systems it's just because they don't do the proper maintenance on them, and Windows just gets tired and confused.

Hello,

Grisoft (the company which makes AVG) is probably one of the top ten security companies in Europe, but I do not think they are the first.

It is hard to get data because so many companies are private, but I would imagine it breaks down like:

F-Secure (46.5M EUR in H1'07)
Panda or Kaspersky
Sophos
{I am guessing Alwil, Avira, Frisk, Grisoft and Softwin fit somewhere in here}
Utimaco (41.7 EUR in H2'06+H1'07)
Norman (16.6M EUR in H1'07)
{I am guessing AEC, Dialogue Science, G-DATA, MKS, VirusBuster all fit somewhere in here}

Of course, there are companies like Juniper, McAfee, RSA, Symantec and Trend that do a healthy amount of business in Europe, but since they are headquartered elsewhere I do not think it is fair to include them (plus, I do no believe they break down revenue by territory).

Keep in mind, the ranking above is a total guess on my part and, I should mention, not anything to do with my employer (who operates in the same space, too).

I went to the Avira site and found one pearl, among the flotsam and jetsam.
At the very bottom of the page was a FREE program called NTFS4DOS. It's a Floppy disk builder that will create a DOS boot floppy that can be used to access an NTFS hard drive.

It's well worth the download for any techie types. I got mine!
Now I just need to find an NTFS hard drive to test it on.
Maybe tomorrow........

Cheers,

Let us know how it goes, Shadow. I think I've got a copy of it laying around here someplace.

I fired up the HD that has Vista Beta on it and of course it's NTFS.

The little floppy allowed me to access the HD and delete a file.

Voila!

I'll use that the next time I've got a customer with a file that can't be deleted and the drive is NTFS.

Cheers Mates!

Hello,

You can download a copy of Avira NTFSDOS from this page on Avira's web site. It is located towards the bottom of the page. The program was mentioned a few months ago in one of the Lockergnome blogs.

I've been using Avira for a few months now.
It was well reviewed in the UK magazines as being the one that caught most nasties. Ahead of AVG and the paid only ones.
So I switched.

Thanks for the link, Aryeh, it was most helpful...I grabbed NTFSDOS and bookmarked the site for further exploration!

I have 2 XP implementations in NTFS, so this is very helpful!

Cheers! Laughing
