Automatically sorting list items alphabetically

Hi,

We are trying to program a site so that, if one, for example, adds a new item to a list (in the source code), the browser automatically sorts it alphabetically. How can that be done? Preferably in javascript, html or xhtml, however any programming language is welcome. And it doesn't have to be the browser who sorts the list!
