August 29 2008 COOLSITES Newsletter #180 by Mark Donaldson
Almost everyone got this week's newsletter.
I still may have problems from time to time so here is what I have done. Subscribers may use a private link to download the newsletter in the text ( .txt ), html (.html ) and the MS Word Doc ( .doc ) format in a zip file. I will upload the zip files to my archive site right after I send out the newsletter on Friday morning. If a subscriber doesn't receive the newsletter, by 8am EDT, they can quickly download it, unzip it and peruse it offline. You can also read it online from there.
If you are a subscriber and don't know the private link you can email me for it. These zip files are less than 40K which is smaller than the 100K or more newsletter email.

Clif Notes Newsletter, Feb 2007
http://freewarewiki.com/ClifNotes
"The COOLSITES Newsletter - find the coolest links here. This fella named Mark Donaldson has been sending out his lists of cool sites since 2003. I'd never heard of him before last week. One day I was Googling myself to see who was posting links to my newsletter, and I found his website. I guess he's mentioned my newsletter at least 3 times. I like the COOLSITES website too, but I think it could use some reformatting to make it a bit easier to read. What I really like is the content there. Mark must really read a lot of stuff on the web and he takes the best links then tells you about them."

Security News
"Websense® Security Labs(TM) ThreatSeeker(TM) Network has discovered a new campaign of malicious spam posing as FedEx notifications.
The notifications claim to be from FedEx and explain that a package sent by the recipient in the past month was not delivered. The message has an attachment claimed to be a copy of the invoice. The attachment is in a zip file but is actually a Trojan Downloader.
This spam wave is a continuation of an ongoing theme used in recent months of using a parcel service invoice as the social engineering attack vector.

"Websense® Security Labs(TM) ThreatSeeker(TM) Network has detected that the DNS cache on the default DNS server used by the customers of China Netcom (CNC) has been poisoned. When China Netcom customers mistype and enter an invalid domain name, the poisoned DNS server directs the visitor's browser to a page that contains malicious code. China Netcom is among the top ISPs in that country.
When users mistype a domain name, they are sometimes directed by their ISPs to a placeholder Web site with generic advertisements. This is typically an additional revenue source for the ISP. In the case of CNC, customers of this prominent ISP are directed to a Web site under the control of an attacker.
These malicious sites contain an iframe with malicious code that attempts to exploit, among other applications and plug-ins, the Microsoft Snapshot Viewer vulnerability which we reported on at the start o! f the month.
A user querying an unaffected DNS server is taken through to a clean site, whereas a user querying a poisoned name server is taken to a malicious site under the hacker's control. The malicious iframe points to a server in China hosting exploits for RealPlayer, MS06-014, MS Snapshot Viewer and Adobe Flash player.

"Websense® Security Labs(TM) ThreatSeeker(TM) Network has discovered that a Sunkist site is infected with a mass JavaScript injection that delivers a malicious payload. The reporting page on the Sunkist NewsLINK site contains malicious JavaScript code that loads malicious payloads from nine different hosts. Sunkist is a popular drink in the USA, Canada, UK, Australia, and other parts of the world. (Please refer to the Sunkist entry on Wikipedia).

My Old Dog
Dear Mark,
For a few months now I have really enjoyed your newletter "Coolsites". There is always something new to learn.
A few minutes ago, I was just starting to read issue #179 and I read in particulary, this: "most new programs won't work on my old 98 system". Like you, I'm still using W98 (SE) and it is for this reason that I write you to know which Antivirus, Antispyware and Firewall you use on your old W9x box. Providing this information will sure help me to secure more my old but very friendly computer !
Thank you in advance and please keep providing a great newletter !
All the best,
D.G., Mexico City
Dear D.G.:
My old dog is a Compaq DeskPro EN6400 PII 400 MHz. He weighs in at 196 Meg with a 4.3 gig IBM UltraStar ultra wide SCSI drive. He was born in 98 and spent his first 4 years at Enron Corp (which kind of makes him famous). He was auctioned off to Computer Surplus Outlet who I brought him from for $155 and trained him with Windows 98SE. He is healthy, robust and reliable.
I have used all of the free "protection" programs and the ones I like are Avast Antivirus, Spybot Search And Destroy and SUPERAntiSpyware.
I don't use a firewall because I am on dialup and practice safe surfing and safe computing. It's not paranoia when the danger is real.
I have never had an infection.
Mark.
