August 21 2009 COOLSITES Newsletter #231 Mark Donaldson
This newsletter is late due to a computer problem. This morning, while checking links, something I've done dozens of times, my system became slow and then locked up. After trying all of the tricks I know I did a power off reset. When the system booted it wouldn't recognize my hard drives. I checked the BIOS configuration and found no hard drives listed. I ran several "live" CDs to try to recover the master boot record but nothing worked. Later in the day I decided to reset the BIOS by removing the CMOS battery. After reinstalling the battery the system recognized the drives and booted properly. I ran every diagnostic I have and everything is fine. I don't know what caused this error but Saturday morning I will buy a new battery at Walmart (I thought I had a spare). Mark.
Major changes to this newsletter are coming soon
Google is discontinuing Google Pages and will be moving my archive to Google Sites. However their hosting rules will also change. My html files will not be allowed due to "security reasons". This means I would have to use Google's online webpage creation program which would be more time consuming for me and bigger webpages that load slower for you.
I have checked other free hosts and can not find any that will allow me to continue as before without cost. Therefore I will have to change things. What this will mean for subscribers is very little difference. What this will mean for non-subscribers who view the newsletter online and people accessing old newsletters, "Just The Links" and "Specialized Search Engines" webpages may be drastic. I will keep you informed. Mark.
Subscribers who don't receive the newsletter, due to stupid filters, may use a private link to download the newsletter in the text ( .txt ), html ( .html ) and the MS Word Doc ( .doc ) format in a zip file. I will upload the zip files to my archive site right after I send out the newsletter on Friday morning. If a subscriber doesn't receive the newsletter, by 9am ET, they can quickly download it, unzip it and peruse it offline. You can also read it online from there.
If you are a subscriber and don't know the private link you can email me for it. These zip files are less than 40K which is smaller than the 100K or more for the newsletter.

Clif Notes Newsletter, Feb 2007
http://freewarewiki.com/ClifNotes
"The COOLSITES Newsletter - find the coolest links here. This fella named Mark Donaldson has been sending out his lists of cool sites since 2003. I'd never heard of him before last week. One day I was Googling myself to see who was posting links to my newsletter, and I found his website. I guess he's mentioned my newsletter at least 3 times. I like the COOLSITES website too, but I think it could use some reformatting to make it a bit easier to read. What I really like is the content there. Mark must really read a lot of stuff on the web and he takes the best links then tells you about them."

Security News and Links
I get these links and news from good sources however I do not test the programs myself because I just don't have the time. The definitive source of rogue info is Spyware Warrior- Rogue-Suspect Anti-Spyware Products & Web Sites:
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm
An I.D. Theft Story
The victim, Mark Donaldson (Hey that's me!), who suffers from insomnia wakes up at 5am, on Monday 7-27, satisfied that his sleeping medication gave him 5 decent hours of sleep. After taking care of his normal functions he checks his email. One email is from the bank that handles his credit card informing him of an online charge of $25.96 on Sunday that he never made. He immediately called the credit card company, at 6:30 am, and informed them of a possible I.D. theft. The credit card company said they would close that card's number and send him a new card along with a charge dispute form. He doesn't go online for his daily checking of websites because he has an 8am doctors appointment for a scheduled routine check-up. While at the doctor's office his wife, Dee, receives a computer phone call from the credit card company to call them back. When he returns home, at 10:30 am, he calls them and finds another charge, for over $400, was attempted after his card was suspended. The representative told him that the charge was denied and that a fraud investigator will review this and call him later in the week. He eats a late breakfast since he had fasting blood tests and decides to take a nap to prevent sleep deprivation. After a short but refreshing nap he scans his computer with Avast, SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Avast found nothing. SUPERAntiSpyware found 2 tracking cookies. One was from Fox News and they other was from a computer discounter. They were deleted. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware said that Registry Trash Keys Finder 3.7.0 was Malware.packer. Since this was a standalone/portable program installed on the secondary drive and has never been used it is improbable that it was causing a problem and may be a false positive. To be sure the program was deleted. He then goes online for his daily sites knowing that there was never a security breach on his end and some company he's done business with probably had their data stolen.
Cost to secure my credit card......Nothing
Time needed to correct problem......Less than 30 minutes
How it feels to be secure......Priceless
Update August 7 2009. I was never contacted by a fraud investigator. Mark.
Update August 14 2009. I received a letter from the fraud department saying to call them if I have any questions. Mark.
Update August 21 2009. I received the statement for the acount and the original $25.96 charge had been removed so I don't even have to file a dispute. Case closed. Mark.

Dear Friend,
My name is Mrs.Susan Hillyard the wife of Late Mr. Scoth Hillyard, a British merchant based in Malaysia who died of cancerous attack years ago. I have been Diagnosed with Esophageal cancer presently and it has defied all forms of medical treatment, and right now I have only about a few months to live, according to medical experts.
I have not particularly lived my life so well, as I never really cared for anyone (not even myself) but of my business. Though I am very rich, I was never generous, I was always hostile to people and only focused on my business as that was the only thing I cared for. But now I regret all this as I now know that there is more to life than just wanting to have or make all the money in the world. I believe when God gives me a second chance to come to this world I would live my life a different way from how I have lived it. For what shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world and looses his soul.
Now that God Is About To Call me, I have willed and given most of my property and assets to my immediate and extended family members as well as a few close friends. I want God to be merciful to me and accept my soul, I have decided to give also to charity organizations, as I want this to be one of the last good deeds I do on earth. So far, I have distributed money to some charity organizations in Africa and Asia including the tsunami victims.
Now that my health has deteriorated so badly, I cannot do this myself anymore. I once asked members of my family to close one of my husband accounts and distribute the money which I have there to charity organization they refused and kept the money to themselves. Hence, I do not trust them anymore, as they seem not to be contented with what I have left for them before I became ill. Presently, I am still having a deposit (Undisclosed) with a Finance house that is yet to be disposed off to a God fearing, reliable and trust worthy person. I Beg You In The Name of God to Help Me Carryout This Charitable Assignment by Building an Orphanage Home In Your Country which will be named after I and My Late Husband (Hillyard's foundation). I Believe That You Would Offer This Service For Humanity Sake.
Note:any forther enquires should go to my attorney, barrister Nicolas Miller (bnicolasmiller@yahoo.de). I Await Your Early Response.
Regards.
Billi Barone,
Personal Secretary to Mrs. Susan Hillyard

Some Clunker Traders Being Hosed by Dealers
Some car buyers are being asked to sign agreements guaranteeing to pay car dealers the value of the clunker rebate -- an extra $3500 - $4500 -- should Uncle Sam renege. The DOT has said that consumers are not required to sign such a provision, and Consumer World recommends that you do not. Here are two more things to watch out for when trading in your clunker.
