August 1 2008 COOLSITES Newsletter #176 by Mark Donaldson
Almost everyone got last week's newsletter.
I still may have problems from time to time so here is what I have done. Subscribers may use a private link to download the newsletter in the text ( .txt ), html (.html ) and the MS Word Doc ( .doc ) format in a zip file. I will upload the zip files to my archive site right after I send out the newsletter on Friday morning. If a subscriber doesn't receive the newsletter, by 8am EDT, they can quickly download it, unzip it and peruse it offline. You can also read it online from there.
If you are a subscriber and don't know the private link you can email me for it. These zip files are less than 40K which is smaller than the 100K or more newsletter email.

Clif Notes Newsletter, Feb 2007
http://freewarewiki.com/ClifNotes
"The COOLSITES Newsletter - find the coolest links here. This fella named Mark Donaldson has been sending out his lists of cool sites since 2003. I'd never heard of him before last week. One day I was Googling myself to see who was posting links to my newsletter, and I found his website. I guess he's mentioned my newsletter at least 3 times. I like the COOLSITES website too, but I think it could use some reformatting to make it a bit easier to read. What I really like is the content there. Mark must really read a lot of stuff on the web and he takes the best links then tells you about them."

Welcome to Clif Notes Newsletter
July 27, 2008
Hi everyone. I'm sorry I have to tell you that there is no newsletter this week.
The latter part of this week, I had the honor of bringing home my nephew, a new graduate of the US Marine Corps boot camp in Paris Island South Carolina. I'm afraid it was a very long trip and I haven't had time for the pleasure I get bringing a newsletter to you. My family has many members who give and have given their lives in service to all of us here in the States. I help them when I can.
Don't worry, I'll be back soon so I can talk to all of you again.

Security News
"The previously embargoed details of a critical DNS cache poisoning flaw have been correctly deduced, and are now public. In a webinar held just yesterday, Dan Kaminsky, the security researcher who discovered this flaw, confirmed that the vulnerability has been leaked.
More code to exploit this flaw has surfaced since our previous alert on this topic, and attacks have been spotted in the wild.
Major ISPs, including AT&T, Time Warner, and Bell Canada have yet to respond to this threat, leaving millions of subscribers at risk. Microsoft has issued a formal security advisory; Apple, whose Mac OS X servers are susceptible, have yet to issue a statement.
Websense® Security Labs(TM) strongly recommend that customers running their own DNS servers patch immediately. Customers who rely on an upstream DNS provider are urged to contact their provider to confirm that this issue has been addressed properly.

Security Links
Some subscribers have indicated that the anti-spyware/adware programs I have listed here recently are "rogues". I get these links from good sources however I do not test the programs myself because I just don't have the time and most new programs won't work on my old 98 system. The definitive source of rogue info is Spyware Warrior and they weren't listed there. Spyware Warrior- Rogue-Suspect Anti-Spyware Products & Web Sites:

Space Weather News for July 22, 2008
"DESCENDING SPACE JUNK: Almost exactly one year ago, on July 23, 2007, International Space Station astronauts threw an obsolete, refrigerator-sized ammonia reservoir overboard. The 1400-lb piece of space junk has been circling Earth ever since and now, in July 2008, its orbit has decayed so much that it has become an easy naked-eye target for backyard sky watchers. The "Early Ammonia Servicer" (EAS for short) is almost as bright as the stars of the Big Dipper and growing brighter as it descends. Today's edition of
http://spaceweather.com displays photos of the EAS, which is expected to burn up in Earth's atmosphere in late 2008 or early 2009. Readers who wish to see the EAS with their own eyes should check the Simple Satellite Tracker for flyby times:
http://spaceweather.com/flybys. Europeans are favored with flybys this week, North Americans next week."

Judging the Judge
I've said before, in the June 22 2007 newsletter, that I am a very judgmental person. I allow myself to be very judgmental because "I judge myself first and more harshly than I judge others" which I believe can be thought as a corollary of the "Golden Rule" "Judge others as you would want them to judge you". At least I hope others aren't judging me as harshly as I judge myself.
I have already judged Judge Judy as being guilty of perpetuating anti-male sexisms ( men don't mature as fast, boys and their toys, etc. ). The male judges can't get away with any sexisms but the female judges can ( reverse discrimination? ).
Judy still thinks her TV court is a real court. She won't allow hearsay without that person being there for cross-examination, won't tack on punitive fines unless the litigants have filed for them and Byrd still has to announce "this is case number so and so on the calendar/docket".
Judge Judy was taping when the earthquake hit. I don't know if Byrd was on the set when it hit. I would have expected an authority figure like Judy or Byrd to take charge and say "everyone stay calm and procede to the exit" or something like that. But instead Judy ran off of the set without saying or doing anything but protecting her own butt. It seems that Judy doesn't care about anything but herself and her future income.
Now I judge Judge Judy to be a selfish coward. Mark.
