Post subject: Audio Through Video Card

Hey Everyone,
So I recently bought this computer and I decided to hook it up to my 42' tv via a DVI -> HDMI cable through the video card, but no audio is transmitte through this. I read on a couple of other forums that the ATI HD 3XXX cards support video as well as audio, however I know DVI doesn't support audio, but HDMI does. So I was wondering how I can get audio across to my TV through this video card, will using a DVI->HDMI adapter work? or must I configure this elsewhere?

Also the Mobo has a built in HDMI port, but according to the website it is disabled when a video card is present. I want toi take advantage of this video card so I was also wondering if I could enable this port even with the video card still in, and if so will games still use the cards GPU?

It's a pretty broad question, and I've been googling for a while for a definitive answer, but i was unable to find it. Can anyone help?

Hello and welcome to the forum.

I have no experience with those connections you mentioned, but,
I do have a video card that will output 'S-Video' signals thru an S-Video cable to my PC, but it's video only. There is NO audio coming out of the Video card on my PC, so I must supply audio from my Sound Card to my PC thru another cable, if I want to hear what's going on. It wasn't a very satisfactory setup.

Hopefully there will be someone here with experience in using those connections you mentioned.

Good Luck and Happy Computing,

The Doctor Cool

What DVI->HDMI adapter are you using? In general, DVI does not carry audio signals, so a traditional DVi-HDMI adapter won't work for you.

However, you're in luck - you have an ATI Radeon 3650. If you use the ATI Radeon DVI-I to HDMI adapter, you should get audio and video. But you have to use the right adapter. VisionTek will sell you one for $9.99:

If you look for another one from somewhere else, be very careful. There is a 2xxx series adapter and a 3xxx series adapter. Some report that the 2xxx adapter works on the 3xxx cards, but ATI says differently.

I should add a caveat to all of this: I don't have this card, so I can't verify any of this, but it's been reported in so many places (including on ATIs web site) that I believe it.

Here is another reply that was placed in the wrong thread. I would have moved it in here but all I can do is split topics into new threads:

HDMI supports sound but it has to be ver. 1.3 or above
