April 25 2008 COOLSITES Newsletter #162 by Mark Donaldson

Attention Subscribers and readers. Please read this.

Yea! All subscribers with working inboxes did get the last two newsletters. I believe this is due to my splitting the subscriber list and sending out less than 200 from each of my Gmail accounts. Gmail says that an account may send out 500 emails in a 24 hour period but most people who are having this problem are sending out a lot less than that. It is obvious to me that Google has lowered their limits without telling anyone and would rather gmail be used to receive email then be used as a convenient small bulk emailer.

I still may have this problem from time to time so here is what I have done. Subscribers may use a private link to download the newsletter in the text ( .txt ), html (.html ) and the MS Word Doc ( .doc ) format in a zip file. I will upload the zip files to my archive site right after I send out the newsletter on Friday morning. If a subscriber doesn't receive the newsletter, by 8am EDT, they can quickly download it, unzip it and peruse it offline. You can also read it online from there.

If you are a subscriber and don't know the private link you can email me for it. These zip files are less than 40K which is smaller than the 100K to 130K newsletter email.

I have signed up to use Google's free Google Analytics to track visitors to my website. However I have set it up to NOT share info with anyone, even anonymously, to insure your privacy.

Clif Notes Newsletter, Feb 2007 http://freewarewiki.com/ClifNotes

"The COOLSITES Newsletter - find the coolest links here. This fella named Mark Donaldson has been sending out his lists of cool sites since 2003. I'd never heard of him before last week. One day I was Googling myself to see who was posting links to my newsletter, and I found his website. I guess he's mentioned my newsletter at least 3 times. I like the COOLSITES website too, but I think it could use some reformatting to make it a bit easier to read. What I really like is the content there. Mark must really read a lot of stuff on the web and he takes the best links then tells you about them." http://freewarewiki.com/CoolSitesNewsletter

Security News

"Websense® Security Labs has been tracking a recent development of the malicious JavaScript injection that compromised thousands of domains at the start of this month, just 2-3 weeks ago. The attackers have now switched over to a new domain as their hub for hosting the malicious payload in this attack. We have no doubt that the two attacks are related as our brief analysis in our blog will detail. In the last few hours we have seen the number of compromised sites increase by a factor of ten.

This mass injection is remarkably similar to the attack we saw earlier this month. When a user browses to a compromised site, the injected JavaScript loads a file named 1.js which is hosted on http://www.nihao[removed].com The JavaScript code then redirects the user to 1.htm (also hosted on the same server). Once loaded, the file attempts 8 different exploits (the attack last April utilised 12). The exploits target Microsoft applications, specifically browsers not patched against the VML exploit MS07-004 as well as other applications. Ominously files named McAfee.htm and Yahoo.php are also called by 1.htm but are no longer active at the time of writing.

There are further similarities too between the two mass attacks. Resident on the latest malicious domain is a tool used in the execution of the attack. An analysis of that tool can be found in the ISC diary entry here. Mentioned in that diary entry is http://www.2117[removed].net. Our blog on that attack can be found here. It appears that same tool was used to orchestrate this attack too.

The number of sites affected is in the hundreds of thousands. Casualties of the previous attack include various US news web sites, a major Israeli shopping portal, and numerous travel sites.

Websense® security customers are protected from this attack. www.websense.com "

Security Links

Some subscribers have indicated that the anti-spyware/adware programs I have listed here recently are "rogues". I get these links from good sources however I do not test the programs myself because I just don't have the time and most new programs won't work on my old 98 system.

I have checked for info about those programs and the only indications that they might be rogues come from forums. The definitive source of rogue info is Spyware Warrior and they weren't listed there.

What Me Wonder

I got my car serviced Thursday. Firestone sent me a $20 off on $30 or more service coupon so I got their $37.64 Plus service for $17.64. When I went I took the used oil I drained out of my lawnmower. Since they charge a $2.50 oil disposal fee I recycled that oil with them. In the late 70's, during the oil "crisis", everyone would take your used oil for free and make some extra money by sending it into an oil recycle center. I could even drop off used oil at auto parts stores. What I ask myself these days is why we are paying to dispose of oil when it should be recycled. Mark.

What Me Old

I saw the new ad suggesting McCain is too old to be president. It said he was older than the periodic table and I yelled out "he isn't" because I knew that the table was invented in the 19th century ( Mendeleev wrote it down February 17 1869 and he died in 1907 ). Then it said he wasn't. Then it said he was older than Coke in a can and I yelled "so am I". It said he was older than color television and I yelled "so am I". Almost everything it said he was older than I said "so am I". I AM ONLY 55. According to that ad I am too old to be president yet I know one thing "with age comes wisdom" (author unknown). I know under 50 year olds that are as "unwise" as I used to be.

In the 60's they said "don't trust anybody over thirty" (Jack Weinberg 1965). I have never trusted politicians. My father had a saying "politicians, salesmen, prostitutes they're all the same animal". Mark.

In memorial to my neighbor Melvin who had a long full life and the wisdom that comes with age. He is survived by his wife June and his son Doug. He will be missed. Mark.
