April 18 2008 COOLSITES Newsletter #161 by Mark Donaldson

Attention Subscribers and readers. Please read this.

Yea! Almost all subscribers did get last week's newsletter. I believe this is due to my splitting the subscriber list and sending out less than 200 from each of my Gmail accounts. Gmail says that an account may send out 500 emails in a 24 hour period but most people who are having this problem are sending out a lot less than that. It is obvious to me that Google has lowered their limits without telling anyone and would rather gmail be used to receive email then be used as a convenient small bulk emailer.

I still may have this problem from time to time so here is what I have done. Subscibers may use a private link to download the newsletter in the text ( .txt ), html (.html ) and the MS Word Doc ( .doc ) format in a zip file. I will upload the zip files to my archive site right after I send out the newsletter on Friday morning. If a subscriber doesn't receive the newsletter, by 8am EDT, they can quickly download it, unzip it and peruse it offline. You can also read it online from there.

If you are a subsciber and don't know the private link you can email me for it. These zip files are less than 40K which is smaller than the 100K to 130K newsletter email.

I was falsely wronged
but then I prolonged
my friends helped prove
I was right all along

Last weekend my main website. luem42.com, was being blocked by my free web host Awardspace.com. They had received a complaint from a trusted source saying I was a spammer and said this source "provided irrefutable proof of their claim: a whole copy of the spam message, with full headers, enlisting particular URLs in your sites. URLs only you may know" and that "the matter is not negotiable. We are sorry but your account is to remain deactivated." I don't know who or what this proof was as they did not share it with me. To say I used their server to send out spam is just wrong because my free account at Awardspace only allows me to receive email not send it.

After several more emails they said "Yes, we know it's possible that someone faked the headers to make it look like you were spamming
but that doesn't necessarily mean that this is the case here"

I saw a crack in their armour after they said "Furthermore, could you elaborate on a motive why anyone would try and sabotage your hosting account in such a foul manner, provided all your site offers is personal security information to the general public?"

I provided them a reason. "As it says on my index page "If you are a public figure and you are a hypocrite, stupid or have committed a crime I will "out you" here. I especially like to out the hypocrites because I think they have the potential to do the most harm to society." Also I print in my newsletter copies of scams (419, Nigerian, lottery, etc.) that I receive to educate my readers. I also print the email addresses the scams come from so that spambots will find them and fill their inboxes. I try to educate my readers and get a little even with the scammers. I guess I opened my self up to revenge from them.""

That was where the emails ended. I contacted my subscribers about the problem and they responded with the most wonderful emails in my defense to Awardspace. Their response with copies of the emails they sent to me brought tears to my eyes and still does as I type this.

On Monday morning I received this email from Awardspace:

Hello,

We have taken a decision to unblock your web site. However, keep in mind that if we receive similar complain/s related to your domain name, it will be permanently blocked. Hopefully, you understand the situation. If there is anything else we can assist you with, please contact us again.

Best Regards, George

Thanks to all of my subscribers who sent emails of support. You really made my day/week/month/year. Mark.

Clif Notes Newsletter, Feb 2007 http://freewarewiki.com/ClifNotes

"The COOLSITES Newsletter - find the coolest links here. This fella named Mark Donaldson has been sending out his lists of cool sites since 2003. I'd never heard of him before last week. One day I was Googling myself to see who was posting links to my newsletter, and I found his website. I guess he's mentioned my newsletter at least 3 times. I like the COOLSITES website too, but I think it could use some reformatting to make it a bit easier to read. What I really like is the content there. Mark must really read a lot of stuff on the web and he takes the best links then tells you about them." http://freewarewiki.com/CoolSitesNewsletter

Security Links

Some subscribers have indicated that the anti-spyware/adware programs I have listed here recently are "rogues". I get these links from good sources however I do not test the programs myself because I just don't have the time and most new programs won't work on my old 98 system.

I have checked for info about those programs and the only indications that they might be rogues come from forums. The definitive source of rogue info is Spyware Warrior and they weren't listed there.

Now here's someone who was really wronged

Md. court expands definition of rape; woman can revoke consent mid-act. http://blogs.usatoday.com/ondeadline/2008/04/md-court-expand.html

"Maouloud Baby was convicted of first-degree rape in December 2004 after jurors heard testimony that the 16-year-old continued having sex with an 18-year-old woman for "about five or so seconds" after she told him to stop."

The "adult" woman was having sex with the "minor" boy and he's convicted. The first appeal overturned it but it was upheld on the second appeal. It used to be consent before penetration meant consent. Now it's possible to withdraw consent during the act. What's next? Withdrawing consent after the act. It probably took him those five or so seconds to realise she really meant it and wasn't just playing "word games". And why wasn't the woman prosecuted as a predator. If the genders were reversed you know the 18 year old "man" would be in jail and on the predators list for life.
