Howdy all. I'm beginning to shop for a new laptop, and would like some recommendations. The main thing is that I want XP, not Vista. Thanks in advance.

Mike.

Hello,

Are there any particular applications you need to run on the new notebook computer, or hardware that it must have (built-in serial ports, a MMC card reader, fingerprint scanner, camera an so forth) or that you must connect it to (test equipment, serial or parallel ports-eqipped devices and so forth)?

Do you have any requirements for size (both minimum and maximum) and weight?

Is there a price ceiling for the notebook computer?

Regards,

Thanks for the reply. Here's my answers in order:

As already stated, I'd like to stay with XP. I'll also keep using Office 2k. That's the 2 biggest ones. It needs at least 4 USB ports. I'd like a 5 in 1 card reader. 17 inch LCD. Core2 Duo cpu. Doesn't need to be top of the line, but does need a GOOD video card. No on board video or sound. Would gladly accept suggestions on these last two items, especially.

No particular size or weight needs.

Price ceiling under 2k.

Thanks again,
Mike.

Two comments:
If you see a laptop you like and it doesn't have enough USB ports, add a powered USB hub.
Installed card readers have problems. You'd probably avoid lots of headaches if you just purchased a USB external floppy card/reader combo (something like this http://www.cyberguys.com/templates/SearchDetail.asp?productID=8920 ) or just a USB card reader.

Hello,

For a notebook with a 17" screen, discrete graphics and audio and four USB 2.0 ports you are probably going to be looking at a gaming notebook of some sort. Dell and Toshiba make several models which should meet your requirements. Asus has one gaming model which might be of interest to you as well.

Thanks again, Aryeh. I've looked at the Dells and Alienware, and I'll take a look at Toshiba and Asus models.
