My wife and two young school-age daughters (5 and 7) are coming down to Seattle with me during Gnomedex, but they're not exactly big Internet/blog/RSS/XML/open-source types (my wife has a blog, and they all have Gmail, though!).

They plan to spend the three nights/four days doing some other stuff. Perhaps other people going down are bringing guests who won't attend Gnomedex itself? If so, shall we organize some activities (Seattle Center, swimming, museums, shopping, family-friendly dinners, etc.) that they can do while we're all geeking out? Maybe some of the Vancouver attendees want to get together?

I'd appreciate some suggestions here for things to do. I'll post a similar request on my website in case others want to make comments there.

On Saturday (maybe other days?) check out the Pike Street Market. Lots of vendors, the famous fish shops, and all kinds of cool cultural stuff. A very Seattle experience. The Seattle Art Museum is just down the street, and looks pretty cool from the outside (I've never been inside). Of course, there are the standard touristy things, like the Experience Music Project and the Space Needle, but I've never done either of those.

Hope that helps!

I took my kids to the EMP last year, and they had fun, but it seemed pricey for what you get, compared to the Zoo, Aquarium, or Science Center, especially since the more static displays (except the Beatles one) weren't of much interest to them.

Chris pointed out the Gnomedex Stuff to Do in Seattle page, which offers good suggestions. I am wondering of any non-attendees want to have anything specific, such as a particular outing, or a dinner that conference and non-conference types can both go to with kids, etc. Ivar's Acres of Clams is on the waterfront not far from the venue, for instance, and so is the Aquarium.

That Ride the Ducks thing looks pretty cool in an incredibly touristy way.

Hello,

You might want to try asking your question on the Seattlist mailing list. Many Seattle residents are on it and I am sure they could give you some excellent suggestions.

We're organizing a family dinner event Friday at 6 at Ivar's Acres of Clams. Head on over to the Gnomedex wiki and add your name if you want to be part of the reservation.
