I have been using AVG Free for over a year. No problems. Recently I noticed the icon in the sys tray turning black and gray which means I need to reboot. Now EVERY update requires a reboot - even as I type this. I get the Lockergnome SECURITY emails and found in the AVG section that I am NOT alone with this problem. Others were asking the same question - how to fix this.

I did reset the UPDATE MANAGER or thought I did since puters ain't my generation. Message said I was FULLY protected upon reboot.

I am using Win 98SE with AOL 7.0 and IE 6.0 on a fairly recent clean install.

1) Any idea what changed ??
2) More important - HOW do I fix this ?

As I said, I can see I am not alone. Posts with the AVG "forum section" ( which I can't find without the newsletter link, had no answers at the time a few days ago.

If anyone has answers or can provide links in Lockergnome..........

TIA

I have used AVG pro for a couple of years now and have had the same experience as did a couple of machines at work both AVG free and Pro!
I don't have answer as to what is causing it but it has stopped on it's own and all appears to be ok. It maybe the software as well as the virus definition needed updating.

The fix:
1. Launch AVG free Control Center
2. Highlight Update Manager and select Properties at the bottom
3. Make sure the Properties tab is the one you are looking at (not the General tab)
4. Remove the circle from "update upon next computer restart" by putting a circle in the choice below this "update immediately" and If computer restart is required (sometimes it is) select "require confirmation from the user".

For some reason, at one point in time, my settings in 98SE got changed and I too had to reboot after all the updates. I had to go thru the above steps to fix it.

Hi!

I have had the same problem for a week or so and actually found the complete, "official" answer on AVG's site. (Not only that, but it worked!) They say:

Update requires restart

If the message appears even though you rebooted, please perform following procedure:

* Open AVG Control Center and double-click the Update Manager component. There should be the following settings:

Update immediately
(If computer restart is required)
- Require confirmation from the user

If your settings are any different, please modify them to these values.

* Then in AVG Control Center highlight the Update Manager component (click on it once). Push the Settings button and switch to the Advanced tab.
* Push Delete update temporary files button and confirm with OK.
* Please check if there is WAIT4SD file present in the AVG program folder (C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG7 by default). If there is a file with such name, delete it.
* Reboot your computer.
* Now please try to update again.

If the problem still persists, please send us e-mail directly from AVG: AVG -> Information -> Technical Support by E-Mail. This email will contain information about your system and about AVG installed on your computer.

This worked fine for me -- didn't even have to re-start after I told it to re-check for updates. (I'm running AVG Free edition, so the file location was different but that file wasn't there anyway.) Here's the address of the answer on their site, in case you want to bookmark it:

I hope this helps!

I`ve got a couple of PC`s with AVG, one on XP and the older one still on 98SE and rebooting only seems to be needed on the 98SE machine, so I suppose it must be something to do with that operating system.

I've noticed on my last couple of installs, this reboot was happening. I was thinking they must have changed something. I will try the fix. Thanks for the post.

AVG runs all the time with its "Live Scanner". If an update contains a new "Live Scanner" engine, which only starts on boot, then truly a reboot is required. It's been that way over the years with countless programs.

If it only happens occasionally, I'd surely not worry about it.
There's too many, much more important things in this world to worry about.

I have to agree. I wouldn`t have thought it was a major disaster. The re-boot is a minor inconvenience, but just one of those things, as we Brits say!
