just coming to post a message and seen yours.

look for the free version of avg 8 they still have it only make it almost a feeling of guilt if you click the link for it.

but its there.

just one thing you MUST DO write down your email server info in your email client program. and in the avg 7 options cause the new one will mess up the info. i got mine working again but not sure if it is scanning email it says it is but still not sure.

so write down your info so you can have an easier time when you replace it.

the avg 8 free is a little strange to get use to you need to go to tools and then use the advance settings to get to any of the settings for the program.

it seems easier / more user friendly with less links. and has a new gui looks a little like spyware blasters gui. or ad aware's gui?

also they changed the color of their icon? makes one wonder who owns avg? Surprised

Shocked

Thanks for that, Keith, I hunted around the 'Grisoft' site but couldn't find anything, in the end I Googled for it and got it on the 2nd link.

I'd gotten so fed-up with that pesky nag-screen, I uninstalled AVG and replaced it with Avast, for a test run Wink

I'm now DL'ing AVG8 for Mrs WereBo's PC, I'll see how the 'New & Improved Recipe' AVG is on hers

Howdy Werebo.
Both your links in the other locked post seem to do the same thing. No direct link to AVG 8?

The popup nag screen on the free version has been mentioned in the AVG forum. I guess that is the price you have to pay if you want to keep using the free version. Since the version 8 includes both an anti-virus and an anti-malware detector, I suspect that is why the size is so large. Since I only need an anti-virus, I will switch to Avira which got an excellent rating at one of the anti-virus testing sites. I think it was Virus Bulletin.

Well, I installed the AVG 8 with no problems, it discovered v7.5 and uninstalled it OK. After rebooting, it updated itself for the latest definitions and settled down nicely, in the system tray.

I didn't notice any problems with my email server, but then again, I use Mozilla 'SeaMonkey' as my mail-client.

The set-ups, options and various bits 'n' pieces are still the same, just in different places and with a new makeover. I suppose time will tell whether it all works as it should. Wink

Thanks for that test drive. Sounds promising. Might just try it on my second PC first. I suppose I can always do a system restore in the event of a problem. I was a bit puzzled by the mention by rovingcowboy of e-mail server settings being cocked up.

An update,
Did a scan with AVG 8 and came up with very long list of potentially dangerous objects. All having to do with IE active x compatibility issues. Found out why here: www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?p=1232307

that was a save you just did jimmy. i had found 192 activex warnings with my scan.

i am sorry for the so late update on my scan.. but the dadblamed thing was a pain in the a........

this computer was the one with the messed up email servers i use msn email and they don't use standard pop email servers.

so that is why the number that was put in for the server did not work and hosed all my pop 3 server numbers on every option they were in. but that was easy to fix just an extra step that would not have been as much to do, if i had wrote down the numbers first. Embarassed

okay update on scan for this computer it took a blooming 5 and half hours to scan this thing. just what are all the files called i386 any way they must be on here about 5 times in all different locations? some are hidden files with $.....$ as the folder names, if that means junk files then they should have been removed when i cleaned up the system awhile ago.??

but that dang file is on both hd's in the system. its huge.

okay the update on the lenovo computer.

no trouble with putting the update on a flash drive and moving it to that computer then installing it. that computer does not have email set up on it.

ran the scan on it, and it only took 1 hour and 5 minutes to scan that system?

now for the pain in the a..... computer. man was that a nightmare. so LISTEN UP.

this might happen to you if you are on a computer you upgraded to winxp. as that is what i did with this computer that was a pain to install.

i tried 4 times to install the avg update from the same update file i used here that i put on the flash drive. each time it kept locking up the install at creating a backup file of the compuconfg file. that was really a pain since that is 3/4's the way through the install.
but i had to each time press reset on the computer nothing would work and i even after restarting it ran all maintance programs that i could. and it still locked up on that file.

now the nightmare part is how i fixed the install. i downloaded that update on that computer, which is on dialup it took me almost 4 hours to download that update on the old 56k modem.
it took almost 2 hours on the wireless connection and i thought that was long.
but in downloading it on its own connection i thought that i would just try leaving it connected to the web, and install it like that, and this time i let it do the recommended update where it added that tool bar, i had been doing the custom one and taking that off. i also this time took off the checkmark for adding the ms office plugin. i did'nt need that since i don't use office on that computer.

and after the install this time it said one error was found and if it happens again i should report it to their support, which is not around for the free version.

but it got fixed when installing it with the web connection still open, i think it went out and got what it needed. Confused

your welcome. now do you really want to feel so much of a newbie ??? the link to the free version is in the popup nag window. Laughing Rolling Eyes

its the link that makes you feel guilty for clicking on it.
the one that says if you really want to continue with your .........scanning then click here.

I've installed this for several friends (and updated 4 more) with no problems. It is a big download (as mentioned), but the install process is quick and painless. I haven't tried it yet with an MSN account machine -- all the people I know on MSN have high speed except one (and they keep everything online). I'd be interested if anyone has any more feedback on someone with local MSN installed who is still on dialup.

The i386 that you asked about is (for lack of a better definition) like a ghost image of your OS. It is part of the files used to build your system. I assume that you may NOT have gotten any disks with it & this is your "DISKS" per say - look on a OS disk & you will see a folder by this name. You can actually copy this folder to a HD & install from it. Had to do this a time or two. (don't remember the exact reason - something about not seeing the rom drive, I think)

This can also be used by your OS (& you with proper commands) to fix problems when they occur. So you can see that it is a good idea to LEAVE IT.

Now if you DO have the disks then you MAY get away with removing it & gaining that space. But unless you know how to fix computers at an advanced level, I'd leave well enough alone!!!

yeah okay baby tux thanks i had forgotten what that was for. Surprised but why is it there 4 or more times in different locations? Shocked i could just delete it i have the disk. i think i'll find the oldest one and get rid of that one, i still don't know why the folders with $ ...... $ for a name are doing on the system i thought i got rid of them? Confused ms must have put them back doing an update?

I hope I get this right, but I THINK the $.....$ files you are referring to are "in use" by the system.

I have noticed on my own machine at times if I have the right folder open & go to do something that there will be these "ghost" files until I close the one in question, then the ghost one goes away. BTW you can't directly delete them as the system locks them.

This may be part of the reason for the dupes in th i386 - other than that not sure - only need one for each (different) OS installed. - Please note: if you do decide to delete, there ARE other things that use folders by the same name. Be careful of what you delete.

I'm confused (like, that's something new) Confused Laughing Laughing Laughing

I've been using AVG AV since way back when and I've yet to ever get a Nag Box about anything. And, still don't!!!

I did try AVG 8 but for some reason I decided to go back to 7.5 FREE.
I support over 150 customers who still use AVG 7.5 FREE, so I need to be using what they are using, for continuity.

I may try ver 8 again on my second PC, just to see what everyone is talking about, with the email, etc.

When I double click the AVG icon in the system tray, to open the control panel, I get the standard window with a little ad in the lower left hand corner for the new Ver. 8, but that's it......NO Nag Boxes.

If the new ver 8 is so large, I'd suggest downloading it just once and then burning it to a CD, or Flash Drive, if you have any idea that you'll be sharing it with others.
Don't just repeat the download, over and over again. That's redundant!

I share dozens of programs with my customers, so I keep all the latest version of everything in an "Output" folder on my HD, which I burn to CD every week, or after I've added a new program to the folder.
I use a little util called "Vise Versa" to update my Flash Drive.

I take both the fresh CD and my Flash Drive with me on every call.

Anyway, I'll be looking at AVG 8.0 FREE.
The last time I looked at it, it was a trial version.

If they have truly released a 100% FREE version, I'm all for it.

Cheers Mates!

Since my last post, I've gone around and upgraded from 7.5 to 8 on about 30 home (non-commercial) customers. Smooth every time and, yes, I brough it on thumb drive. I remain impressed how AVG can manage to make these update setups work quite smoothly.

Since my last post, earlier today, I downloaded the AVG 8 FREE and installed it.
Yes, it did uninstall ver 7.5 and YES it sure looks different.
No problemo' ! Wink

It WILL take some getting used to. Confused
I let it install the AVG toolbar, but NOT the Yahoo start page. Rolling Eyes

I ran the scan and got the long list of Active X thingy's.
Here's the scan report. (scanned drive C: only)

Error: image could not be loaded. Image is not available from server

Image URL: http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g90/DrWho1943/AVGScanReport.jpg

As shown here, the Active X things are "Alerts" and not 'Removals'. So I see no problem with that. Alerts are easy to just ignore. Wink

So I have to say, that at this writing AVG 8.0 FREE is a keeper. Very Happy

Cheers Mates!
