Hi THoyboy,
Click Start, and then click Run.
Type winmsd.exe, and then click OK.
When System Summary is selected in the navigation pane,
locate Processor under Item in the details pane.
Note the value. If the value that corresponds to Processor starts with x86, the computer is running a 32-bit version of the Windows operating system.
If the value that corresponds to Processor starts with ia64 or AMD64, the computer is running a 64-bit version of the Windows operating system. |

Hello,
Just to add to Pasquanel's instructions, if WINMSD.EXE is not present on your computer, try running MSINFO32.EXE instead to start the System Information program.

To find just the OS, you can just look in "System" in the control panel.
It will tell you what version of the OS you're running.
Also, what cpu and how much ram you have.
It don't get much easier than that.

WELL, that happens sometimes, when you post a question and don't do the required stuff.....like telling us everything you can about your system.
(Make, model and OS)
I just looked at my own XP control panel and there is a "System" icon there, just like its been since the Windows 98 days. As always, it's tabbed and the first tab is the General tab with all the information I previously mentioned.
But if you somehow found out what you needed, that's good!
I hope that knowing that information helps you out.
Happy Holidays!

And if yer inna hurry, a right click on 'My Computer' and 'Properties'
will usually get you there.
On the other hand, we have four fingers and a thumb...
Just couldn't resist,

Does not on any of my computers, it gives me which version of Windows it's serial number and what service pack.
It gives me info on my processor and how much ram.
The question was how to determine if the system is 32 or 64 bit. |

Time for a keyboarder to weigh in; winkey-pause is probly the quickest way to bring up system props.

32 bit is the default OS so they don't really have to tell you it's 32 bit.
However if it's the new 64 bit, they will tell you so.
Sort of like, if it ain't female, then it must be Male!
Or something like that.
Like someone asked, "how do I know if I have Windows Media Center".
Well, READ the OS in the General screen under "System" in the control panel.
If it's a Media Center OS, they will definitely tell you so.
So if they don't tell you it's "Windows Media Center" , , , then it's NOT!
Here's the "system" screen I'm talking about. It's in the Control Panel.

I read this screen every time I work on a new (new to me) computer to tell me everything I need to know before starting my tune-up procedure.
The two questions I need answers to are:
What is the OS.... that is, 'What version of windows is this PC running'?
In most cases, it's either "Home" , "Pro", or "Media Center".
Home and Pro get the same treatment, but "Media Center" takes some special attention.
(I really hate the Media Center version of Windows XP)
How much ram does this PC have? Does this PC need more ram to run efficiently?
If the PC is short on ram, I go to www.crucial.com and take their FREE SCAN which then shows me and the customer, what they have, what they need and how much it will cost. Many people whip out the plastic and order the ram upgrade right then and there.
The screen I've shown above, tells me everything I need to know, before starting a PC Tune-Up.
Happy New Year Everyone!
