I guess you can't get a better bargain than free.

The Creative Commons Wiki has a list of 45 books available for download under Creative Commons licenses. Authors usually release these books under a CC license in the hope that readers will eventually purchase the print version of that or another of their books.

The site (Books - CcWiki) includes both fiction & non-fiction books. A few of the titles are:

Non-fiction:
Peers, Pirates, and Persuasion: Rhetoric in the Peer-to-Peer Debates
GAM3R 7H3ORY
Looking for a Fight: Is There a Republican War on Science?
The Wealth of Networks

Fiction:
Accelerando
Stranger Things Happen
Someone Comes To Town, Someone Leaves Town
The Escapist

These are complete books (not extracts or abridged versions). If you want to do something such as create a derivative work or a movie based on it, just make sure you check which version of the license the book is published under. More info at: Frequently Asked Questions - CcWiki.

You can download the books from: Books - CcWiki. Links to print versions for purchase are also listed.

Here's a site with thousands of free books, and not just reference ones. It also contains books by well known authors such as Mark Twain, Thomas Hardy & Robert Louis Stevenson. Thanks to Pirillo’s Picks for 03/07/2007 ~ Chris Pirillo for supplying the link.
