Hi All,
My boss is very interested in switching to a different top level domain name.
Currently my company uses www.hydroteksystems.com for our website and e-mail.
There is a set of people in the company that feel this is just too long of a name.
We've explored many other possibilities in the .com realm and none that we would like are available.
So somebody suggests hydrotek.us, it's short and reflects the fact that we're an American company and so on...
At first I was ready to jump on that, so I registered it. But now as I think about it more I'm not so sure it is going to be the wonderful move that the CEO thinks it will be.

So my question for my fellow gnomies is this...
How do you perceive companies that use a non dot com URL?
I think that a lot of the SEO I have been working on will have to be rebuilt (especially links from other sites) what are your thoughts?
Any other pros and cons about moving to a .us URL?

Your thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks
Paul

.us is better to get high ranking in google.us
.com is better to get high ranking in google.com

If your company needs visitors (costumers) from outside us, i should stay at the .com domain

if it doesnt need the outside us visitors, then take the .us name, its shorter and better for search engines.

Are you sure? When I type in google.us I just get forwarded to google.com. Does google store a cookie that remembers that I went to their us site before com?

There's no such thing as google.us It is just a redirect to the google.com site.

To the topic starter. How ignorant is your client base? Computer savy people understand .biz and .us names. Grandma can't figure out why whitehouse.com is a p*rn site and doesn't understand .gov.

If your market is technically savy then you'll not have a problem. If not you will loose clients to the domain name that matches yours in the .com TLD.
