Could it be that the rest of the world ‘gets it’ while we here in the US continue to use calling plans instead of jumping on the prepaid bandwagon?…

A prepaid plan is good at times. But if I had the $$$ for $50+ a month, I would go with a monthly plan. I am now using Virgin Moblie, if I am away from the cities/Interstate highways (which I am a lot) No Service. And even at 10 cents a min, if I want to talk to my family I need to load up on the prepaid card ($$$). When my family calls, we can talk for hours or more. So I have them call me on my land phone, while they are using their free minutes. After checking, their monthly bill is smaller than mine for the same amount of talk time.

I think pre-paid is best for people like me, infrequent callers. I, too, have Virgin Mobile. My situation is a bit different in that I got the phone while working for a company that sold them, so I got a cheaper quarterly rate (i.e. employee discount). I only add $15 every third month, and am still holding a balance of over $100. However, I only use it for emergencies and brief business calls. I have no desire to get a "real" cell phone.
I think for someone in your position, a regular plan is more practical.
