| I have a Nikon CoolPix 4600 that has worked fine for about a year. I tried to connect today to transfer pictures to my computer and it is not working. Everything is connected, but not being read by my computer. I am using Windows XP and have had no problems until today. Please help.

| Are you using the camera's own software or Windows Scanner and Camera Wizard ?
This happened once with my camera (kodak) and then someone told me that XP can import pictures from some cameras even if the camera software isn't installed. Sometimes XP doesn't detect the camera. You may find that windows has detected the camera but has "forgotten" to tell you. To see if it has, (unless you've already tried this) open Control Panel, then open Scanner and Camera Wizard. If the camera has been detected, it should be showing there. You can then click on the camera icon and this should allow you to upload the pictures.
If all else fails, is there a spare usb cable you could try ?

After one of MS updates (had to do with MS"java" versus SunJava) broke the camera software for my first digital camera an HP, I got used to using a USB attached card reader.
I now have a Nikon Coolpix L3. I never installed the camera software. I put the sd card in the reader, copy the photos over to the camera - leaving the originals on the card - and use Irfan to edit my photos.
Eventually when the card is full, I'll burn the pictures (at the top resolution and very large size) to a CD and erase the images from the card so I can reuse it. |

Another good erason for using a USB card reader is that it saves a lot of camera battery power too  ...... |

| Some time ago I gave up on the camera programs and for three years now just use a card reader. If you use Photoshop you can do a better job than the camera program. |
