A description of exactly what happens after pushing the power button might help as well.
Does the thing beep? Do you see anything at all, like the video BIOS info or Windows starting before it goes black? Can you hear the fans spin up? The Harddrive noises? Do any lights flash on the keyboard or hinge area?
If it's Windows, try tapping the F8 key a few times on the top of the keyboard after turning it on to see if you get the Advanced Menu. If you do, choose Safemode and see what happens.
Let us know... |

400Mhz? That's not a good machine to run XP on.
To the problem at hand, does the laptop have a monitor connector/port in the back? If so, connect a monitor (if you have a regular computer monitor in the house) to the back and see if anything shows up. If so, then the LCD monitor on the laptop is bad. If nothing shows up still, it could be a bad video card. |

| Yes, go to the HP site and find your model number - then click on the link for recovery disks. I've ordered 2 sets in the last month - and they come fairly fast (and only cost about $16 with shipping). |

| I too have ordered disks from HP - not recovery but for other HP items that I own. I would always advise getting the disks from the manufacturer rather than from ebay because then you are 100% positive that you are getting the correct disks for your hardware. |
